Lib Dems highlight shameful safety risks of Earl's Court crossing

Earl's Court has been revealed as having one of London's most inaccessible and unsafe pedestrian crossings.

Research by Caroline Pidgeon, Leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, shows that a pedestrian crossing on Earl's Court Road (junction with Bramham Gardens and Earl's Court Square) is one of a handful in London that are not only breaking national safety standards over the minimum time for pedestrians to cross the road but is also failing to provide any assistance for blind people to cross the road.

Caroline, who obtained the information following a series of written questions to the Mayor of London, said:

"At present the Mayor of London seems to put the interests of pedestrians at the very bottom of his priorities. It is simply shameful that there remain pedestrian crossings in London that are so inaccessible and unsafe.

"The Mayor should ensure as a matter of urgency that every pedestrian crossing in London is safe and accessible for everyone."

Supporting Kensington & Chelsea Lib Dems in Earl's Court

Caroline visited Earl’s Court in Kensington and Chelsea on 10th August to support local Liberal Democrats including Linda Wade, who is standing in a council by-election in Earl’s Court ward.

Caroline joined Linda and local representatives of residents’ groups to discuss a range of issues including transport plans for Volleyball which will be hosted at Earl’s Court, some dangerous pedestrian crossings and the poor location of the Mayor’s new bike hire scheme.

Caroline joins Lib Dems from across London and the UK at Pride 2010

Caroline Pidgeon AM, Leader of the London Assembly Lib Dems, joined senior Lib Dems including Lynne Featherstone MP, Sarah Ludford MEP, and party president Ros Scott, at the Pride London 2010 event on Saturday 3rd July - the UK's largest annual LGBT event.

24-hour working would reduce disruption for Londoners

In the Evening Standard, Ross Lydall reports on calls for the current works on Albert Bridge to continue 24 hours a day, in order to shorten its 18-month closure.

Caroline Pidgeon is quoted in the article, saying:

If London’s gridlock is to be seriously tackled we need to think of imaginative ways to ensure roadworks and repairs to bridges are carried out far more quickly. Work carried out around the clock could play a key role in ensuring far less grief and disruption for Londoners.

Action for Ruston Mews residents

Caroline met with residents from Ruston Mews, which backs onto Ladbroke Grove Tube Station, on Friday 10th July with local Lib Dem campaigner Carol Caruana. Residents have had a huge number of issues with the existing station, including loud announcements. However, with plans to increase the number of trains and lengthen the platforms, even more noise and general problems are feared.

Caroline speaks to West London Line user group

Caroline Pidgeon AM, the Liberal Democrat Chair of the Transport Committee at City Hall, was one of the speakers at the West London Line Group’s recent event at West Brompton.

Caroline joined members of the rail user group including its Chair Mark Balaam for a tour of the station and a discussion about many of the ongoing issues the group are campaigning for.

“It was great to hear the history of this important railway line. It is very important that as part of the Sussex Rail Utilisation Strategy, this line is seen as a good way to help passengers to travel across the capital without having to go into the centre of London. It has huge potential and I hope the Government and Mayor of London consider many of the good ideas the West London Line Group are proposing” commented Caroline Pidgeon.

Bus stops are not an optional extra!

Caroline Pidgeon AM, the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Transport Spokesperson, is set to question Boris Johnson over the absence of bus stops on Ladbroke Grove despite a brand new local bus route having just started.

Caroline Pidgeon has now tabled a question to the Mayor, urging him to ensure that Transport for London provides at least one bus stop and shelter to serve residents who want to make use of the new 228 bus service.

The lack of a bus stop on Ladbroke Grove on the bus route heading from the station to Shepherds Bush and the Central Middlesex Hospital was brought to the attention of Caroline Pidgeon by local Liberal Democrat campaigner Carol Caruana.

After visiting Ladbroke Grove and seeing for herself the unusually long distance that exists on Ladbroke Grove without any bus stop, Caroline Pidgeon said:
“I recognise that a few local residents objected to there even being a bus route, however this is no justification for the bus route not now providing a proper service to the far larger number of residents who rely on public transport.

Small businesses cannot afford congestion charge delay

The harmful effects of the western extension of the congestion charging zone were seen at first hand by Caroline Pidgeon, the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Transport Spokesperson, on her recent visit to the Portobello area. The fact-finding visit was organised by local Liberal Democrat campaigner Carol Caruana, who was keen to update the London Assembly on the impact of the extension on local shops and market stallholders.

After the visit Caroline commented:
“For a long time I have been aware of the harmful effects of the congestion charge extension, however there is no substitute for seeing first hand the harmful impact it is having. Trader after trader told me how they lost business since the congestion charge was extended. The congestion charge extension could not end sooner for businesses in this area.

Congestion Charge extension should be got rid of as soon as possible

Liberal Democrat London Assembly Transport spokesperson Caroline Pidgeon today joined in the calls for the western extension of the congestion charge to be abandoned earlier than 2010, which Mayor of London Boris Johnson has suggested is the earliest date the scheme can cease.

Caroline Pidgeon said:
“The problem is that there are legal procedures that have to be gone through before the scheme can be cancelled. This includes a formal public consultation process. The Mayor should be sitting down now with his lawyers and Transport for London to find a way of making sure that, with the legal process observed, the charge is got rid of as soon as possible.

"It is clear that shops and businesses in the area need action now. They can’t wait two years.”

Caroline welcomes scrapping of the western congestion zone

Commenting on the news that the Mayor of London Boris Johnson is to scrap the western extension of the Congestion Charge zone, Liberal Democrat London Assembly Member and Transport spokesperson Caroline Pidgeon said:

"It is good that that this ill-conceived idea will be abandoned. The western extension of the Congestion Charge zone encouraged thousands of residents to drive into central London, putting the original scheme at risk.
